The Editor-in-Chief Mandate: How Your Strategy Needs a Human Architect

The New Speed of Strategy

We are living through a strange moment where the barrier to entry for producing business artifacts has hit zero. You can generate a go-to-market plan, a financial forecast, or a product roadmap in the time it takes to pour a cup of coffee. If you read my earlier take, The Borrowed Brain Trust: Why Your Strategy Needs a Fractional Edge, you already know where this lands.

The abundance of AI-generated output does not make you smarter. It makes you busier.

The Curator's Dilemma

Most leaders are currently drowning in a sea of mediocre, AI-generated strategy. They mistake the volume of output for the quality of insight. This is classic stochastic output drift territory. When your team relies on models to generate the 'what' and the 'how' of your business, the underlying logic begins to fray. You lose the thread of your original intent.

  1. Move toward high-level curation: Your job is no longer to write the deck. Your job is to judge the deck.
  2. Prioritize human context: AI lacks the lived experience of your specific market, your specific team, and your specific constraints.
  3. Build for resilience: Use AI to speed up the grunt work, but keep the strategic architecture firmly in human hands.

The Fractional Advantage

This is where the fractional executive shines. A seasoned fractional CMO or CPO does not come in to generate more noise. They come in to provide strategic structural intelligence.

They act as the editor-in-chief for your entire GTM stack. They know which AI outputs are gold and which are just expensive hallucinations. They bring the experience to look at a machine-generated plan and ask the one question that matters: Does this actually move the needle for our specific customer?

What this means for leaders

Shift your focus from the volume of your output to the quality of your editorial judgment. You are the final filter. When you bring in fractional leadership, you are not just buying hours. You are buying a seasoned eye that can distinguish between a clever prompt and a viable business strategy. Move toward building a team that treats AI as a junior analyst, not a senior strategist.

My personal note

I have seen too many brilliant founders get lost in the weeds of AI-generated optimization. It is seductive to think you can automate your way to a market-leading position. You cannot. You can only automate your way to a faster version of your current state. If you want to build something that lasts, you must prioritize the human pulse in your decision-making. Use the tools, but keep your hand on the wheel.
