Focus. It is the only currency that matters in this game. OpenAI just proved it by shuttering their Sora video app. They realized that building a consumer social platform is a side quest. A massive, compute-hungry, reputation-risking side quest.
You have 48 hours to audit your own roadmap. Are you building core value or are you chasing a viral moment? The Sora app was a hit. It reached a million downloads in days. It had the buzz. It had the hype. It had the Disney partnership. And yet, it was a distraction.
OpenAI executives admitted they cannot miss the moment by being distracted by side quests. That is the most honest thing I have heard in years. Most companies would have doubled down. They would have thrown more money at the problem. They would have tried to fix the moderation, the compute costs, and the user retention. They would have failed slowly.
Instead, they cut the cord. They chose the mission over the vanity metric. If you are running a product team, look at your backlog. Find the feature that everyone loves but that does not move the needle on your core mission. Delete it. Your team will thank you. Your investors will thank you. Your future self will thank you.
Stop measuring success by engagement if that engagement does not align with your long-term moat. If your product is a utility, do not try to make it a social network. If your product is a platform, do not try to make it a media company. Focus on the one thing that makes you indispensable. Everything else is just noise that costs you your most valuable asset: time.
