OpenAI just shipped a teen-specific version of ChatGPT. It includes quiet hours, age-prediction routing, and hard blocks on sensitive topics like self-harm or romance. If you think this is purely about altruism, you are missing the point. This is about market capture and risk mitigation.
When a platform reaches a certain scale, the biggest threat is no longer the competition. It is the regulator. By proactively creating a sandbox for minors, OpenAI is effectively lobbying for its own legitimacy. They are telling parents and policymakers that they can be trusted with the youth. This is a defensive moat built out of compliance.
We are seeing the end of the wild west era for generative AI. The product is moving from a general-purpose tool to a segmented utility. You will see more of this. Expect to see enterprise tiers, education tiers, and now, age-gated tiers. The goal is to make the product sticky enough to be indispensable, but safe enough to be boring to the regulators.
Stop viewing safety as a feature you bolt on at the end. For OpenAI, safety is the product strategy. If you are building AI-driven tools, your ability to segment your user base and apply context-aware guardrails will determine your survival.
Do not wait for the government to tell you how to protect your users. Build the fences yourself, or someone else will build them for you, and they will not be as kind to your bottom line.
