The new reality of computer use

We have moved past the era of AI as a mere chatbot. With Anthropic acquiring Vercept to push the boundaries of computer use, we are witnessing a transition where AI agents can navigate live applications, click buttons, and execute multi-step workflows just like a human at a keyboard. This is not just a technical upgrade. It is a fundamental change in how your organization will execute its daily operations.

If you read my earlier take, The self-directed transition: How Your Project Roadmap Needs A Human Architect, you already know where this lands. When your software can suddenly perform the work of a junior analyst or a data entry clerk, the temptation to automate everything is immense. However, automation without a clear architectural vision is simply a faster way to create chaos.

The risk of operational drift

When you deploy agents that can interact with your existing software stack, you are essentially creating a new, invisible workforce. This workforce does not sleep, but it also does not understand the nuance of your business strategy. Without proper oversight, you risk falling into operational handoff entropy, where the context of a task degrades as it moves between your human team and your agentic systems.

This is where the role of a fractional executive becomes vital. You do not need a full-time hire to manage the technical implementation of these agents. You need a seasoned operator who can design the agentic workflow orchestration that ensures these tools are actually driving business outcomes rather than just generating activity.

A fractional leader brings the experience to build guardrails that protect your team from the unintended consequences of rapid, unmanaged automation.

What this means for leaders

  1. Prioritize the design of your agentic workflows before you scale them. Treat these agents as junior employees who need clear instructions and constant feedback loops.
  2. Focus on the human-in-the-loop checkpoints. Your goal is to build systems where AI handles the repetitive execution while your team focuses on high-level decision-making and creative problem-solving.
  3. Evaluate your current software stack for agent-readiness. Look for tools that allow for clean API integrations or predictable UI interactions, as these will be the easiest to manage as you transition to more autonomous processes.

My personal note

Technology is moving at a pace that makes traditional planning look like a relic of the past. My advice is to embrace this shift by becoming a curator of your own operational architecture. Do not let the allure of speed distract you from the necessity of precision.

Bring in the expertise you need to build a resilient, agent-ready organization, and you will find that the future is not something to fear, but something to design with elegance and intent.
